The 7th Partnership Summit, the
flagship international event of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)
is being held in the city from 9th to 11th January, 2001. Shri N Chandrababu Naidu, Chief
Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Mr. Shimon Peres, Minister of Regional
Co-operation & Former Prime Minister of Israel, would also be
addressing the inaugural session of the Summit on 9th January.
Delegates of the Partnership Summit arriving in the city will
head towards the Falaknuma Palace for an exclusive dinner being hosted by RV Krishna Kumar, managing director of Taj Group of Hotels and GV Krishna Reddy, chairman of GVK group of industries.
Providing a unique forum for forging
partnerships worldwide, the 7th Partnership Summit at Hyderabad will play
host to key decision makers, bureaucrats, academicians and business
leaders from all over the world. More than 120 overseas delegates are
expected to participate in various forums. A city steeped in history and
marked by the grandeur of the Nizams will see three days of deliberations
centered around vital issues facing the global economy. Nations, states, corporates
and individuals will network and strategies to harness the power of ideas
and forge mutually beneficial partnerships at various levels.
According to CII, the previous six Partnership Summits, held twice in
Calcutta and once each in Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur and New Delhi have
regularly featured Heads of State, Ministers and senior Bureaucrats from
India and abroad. The Prime Ministers of India, Singapore, Canada, UK and
Italy and the Presidents of India and Poland have addressed Partnership
Summits since 1995. The Summits have evoked a phenomenal response from
governments and business delegations from a number of countries and
regions each year. Indian Cabinet Ministers, Chief Ministers, leaders of
political parties, academicians, heads of financial institutions and
business leaders regularly participate at the summit.
Integrating the global economies, the 7th Summit is expected to play host
to high-powered international business delegations from around thirteen
countries namely, Belgium, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Luxembourg,
Mexico, South Africa, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom
(UK), UAE and USA.
Highlighting the issues which would be discussed at the summit, CII stated
that in light of the fast changing and fiercely competitive economies, the
need for synergy between the old and the new economies has become more
pronounced. Therefore, the theme for the seventh Partnership Summit was
very apt - 'Old Economy : New Economy - Moving Ahead Together'. In
consonance with the theme of the seminar, a special plenary session on
'Leveraging Information for Corporate Growth: How the Old uses the New'
has been incorporated in the Partnership Summit. The session would attempt
to explore how technology e-enable enterprises in the new economy and how
the old economy companies have benefited by harnessing new technologies.
Focusing on the need to create right synergies in the information age and
channelise purposefully, a session on India and the IT Revolution has been
included during the summit. The session would delve into how the global IT
revolution has transformed India and how India could develop its own brand
of IT driven change and innovation. The session would also bring to the
fore the new technologies that will drive India's growth. Other important
subjects, such as WTO, Banking, Infrastructure would be covered during the
course of the summit.
While the 20th century is
ending with a clear cut trend towards corporate consolidation and business
mergers, the 21st century has seen this transferred to the geo-political
sphere with regional trading arrangements emerging a basis for trade. To
address the challenges posed by these regional arrangements, a session 'Is
Regionalism Overtaking Multilateralism' has been organized during the
Partnership Summit. The session would also look into whether regional
trade agreements present a win-win situation for the global economy.
In order to cater to the challenges emerging with the globalization of
economies, sessions encompassing these have been incorporated in the 3-day
Partnership Summit. Sessions such as 'Characteristics of Global
Corporations' and 'Globalization and Trade Policy: Can one size fit all'
and other country specific sessions like Strategy for Trade &
Investment between India & Thailand and 'Indo-British Cooperation in
the Knowledge Economy have been incorporated.
A special plenary session 'The United States Under the Bush
Administration' would attempt to look into avenues and brainstorm on the
strategies that need to be adopted for both the countries to move hand in
hand for the next 4 years.
Among the galaxy of important overseas speakers who would be addressing
the meet are Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, Deputy Prime Minister &
Minister of Commerce, Thailand; Mr. Mike Moore, Director General, World
Trade Organization; Mr. Stephen Byers, Secretary of State for Trade &
Industry, Department of Trade & Industry, UK; and Mrs. Lydie
Polfer, Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Grand Duchy of
Luxembourg among others. Mr. Jim McDermott, Co-Chairman of the
Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans (Democrat - Washington)
and Mr. Edward Royce, Co-Chairman of the Congressional Caucus on
India and Indian Americans, (Republican-California), Ms. Lois Grimsrud
Capps, (Democrat - California), Mr. Mark Adam Foley, (Republican -
Florida), Mr. Rush Dew Holt, (Democrat - New Jersey) who are the five
representatives of the US Congressional Caucus visiting India, would also
be sharing their views with the participants.
Other Ministers and senior Indian government officials addressing the
3-day summit would include Yashwant Sinha, Finance Minister of India; Mr.
Murasoli Maran, Minister for Commerce & Industry; Mr. Suresh Prabhu,
Minister for Power; Ms. Sushma Swaraj, Minister for Information and
Broadcasting; Mr. Omar Abdullah Minister of State for Commerce &
Industry; Mr. N K Singh, Secretary to the Prime Minister of India; and Mr.
K Vidhyadhar Rao, Minister for Major Industries, Commerce & Export
Promotion, Government of Andhra Pradesh among others.
Among noted corporate leaders, Mr. Jamshyd N Godrej, Managing Director,
Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co Ltd; Mr. Ramesh Gelli, Chairman & Managing
Director, Global Trust Bank Limited, Mr. B Ramalinga Raju, Chairman, Satyam
Computer Services Ltd. and Mr. Nandan Nilekani, Managing Director and COO,
Infosys Technologies Ltd. among others would be present to share their
views with the participants.
