Opens its restaurant
in City
Hyderabad, April '04:
For the people of Hyderabad the Subway
restaurant is just around the corner. Its Hyderabad
Outlet is located at Lumbini Amrutha Chambers,Road
No:3,Banjara Hills.
The first Subway restaurant in India opened in
December of 2001 in the Saket area of New Delhi.
Although the restaurant itself is small, it is
quite busy, drawing hungry customers who are
visiting the nearby multiplex movie theatre.
Due to cultural and religious preferences, some of
the ingredients used by Subway restaurants in
India have been changed, but they still have a
bahut swaad(delicious) Subway sandwich made by a
Sandwichwala(Sandwich Artist).
Many Subway sandwiches that would traditionally be
made with beef or pork are made instead with lamb,
chicken or turkey. Lamb pepperoni and salami are
popular choices at Subway restaurants in India. In
addition, Subway restaurants in India feature
separate ordering and preparation areas for the
comfort of those purchasing vegetarian foods.
Although the most popular sandwiches at Subway
shops in India are the Roasted Chicken Breast sub
and the Veggie Delite, there are a number of
sandwiches that have been developed especially
with the Indian palate in mind. They include Corn
and Peas; Falafel; Humus; Spicy Veggie; Garden
Pizza; Chicken Tikka; and Paneer Tikka. Paneer is
similar to cottage cheese and Tikka-style foods
are cooked in clay ovens with traditional Indian
spices and are available with a garnish of Mint
Mayonnaise.
SUBWAY® Restaurants was founded in the summer of
1965 in Bridgeport, Conn. It was the brainchild of
17-year old Fred DeLuca and his family friend Dr.
Peter Buck, with its purpose being to earn money
for Fred’s college tuition. With a $1,000 loan
from Dr. Buck, Fred opened up the sub shop, then
called "Pete’s Super Submarines."
Growth - Currently there are more than 20,000
locations in 71 countries, making it the second
largest fast-food franchise in the world.
Approximately 3,500 of these locations are
non-traditional units -- such as convenience
stores, truck stops, colleges/universities,
hospitals, military bases, arenas, shopping malls,
and more. The goal is to be the largest fast-food
franchise in every market just as we have in the
US and Canada and to have locations in every
country of the world. Specifically, SUBWAY®
Restaurants plans to open 1000 additional
locations in North America each year through 2005
and projects to have a total of 2,000
international locations (outside the United States
and Canada) by the end of the year 2003.
Doctor’s Associates Inc. (DAI), the franchisor for
SUBWAY® Restaurants, is a privately held company.
Founder Fred DeLuca serves as President. The
corporate headquarters is located in Milford,
Conn., and employs more than 600.
