| Gail set to begin work on Rs 3,000-cr project

The public sector Gas Authority of India Limited will soon begin work on the
600-km-long pipeline from Hyderabad to Visakhapatnam for liquid natural gas. The total cost of the project is about Rs
3,000 crore.Gail will set up a liqudified natural gas storage terminal either at Visakhapatnam or Rajahmundry. The pipeline project will be
completed in two years and for developing underground pipeline network, an investment of Rs 500 crore will be
made. The pipeline will cover Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda and Krishna, East and west Godavari
districts. The company had entered into an agreement with the Engineers India Limited for laying the pipeline.
EIL earlier executed LNG pipeline project between Jamnagar and Loni in Maharashtra. The pipeline will be laid from Visakhapatnam to Cherlapalli near Secunderabad with a tapping center at Vijayawada. The project is being taken up with view to augmenting the supply of LNG not only in Andhra Pradesh but also in other southern States of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Gail the apex body governing the LPG supply in the country, is currently supplying the cooking gas to the southern States through its refineries at Visakhapatnam, Mangalore, Nagapatnam, Chennai and Cochin. At present, Gali supplies 4.8 million cubic meters of gas per day to the State of which nine per cent is for fertilizer and power plants. The increased gas supply would enable an increase in the fertilizers output to one million tone per annum and 200 per cent increase in the power sector from existing level of 1400 MW.
