TEXTILES

The textile industry, particularly the spinning and processing sectors in Andhra Pradesh is well developed .The State is a leading producer of cotton with an annual production base of about 2.6 million bales on an average. Medium grade as well as superior long staple varieties of cotton are predominant.

The State has a mature spinning sector with a spindlage of over 1.6 million. There are over 80 spinning mills including a good number of 100% export oriented units with state-of-the-art machinery, producing cotton, synthetic and blended yarns.

There is substantial potential to establish modern weaving units in the State. At present there are 1079 weaving units with a production capacity of 768 million meters of fabrics. There is a growing demand for good quality fabrics by the apparel manufacturing industry which at present is being met partly by imports.

Andhra Pradesh has also emerged as a large textile processing centre with over 100 units with a processing capacity of 13 million meters of cloth per annum. A few of the units have modernized their plants to meet international standards. The world over there is a growing consciousness about quality control norms particularly regarding the use of azo-free and eco-friendly dye. There is considerable potential to modernize the existing units and to set up new state of the art plants to meet international standards. There are well-developed industrial estates in the State where such units can be set up.

LEATHER

Andhra Pradesh with a livestock population of more than 46 million is a major producer of hides and skins in India, contributing about 19 million pieces per annum which constitutes about 10 % of the country's raw material. While most of this raw material goes to the State of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal for processing, there are 34 large and medium tanneries in the State of Andhra Pradesh producing about 40 million square feet of processed hides and skins per annum.

The Leather Industry in Andhra Pradesh produces a large range of products for the domestic and international markets. There are 15 garment manufacturing units, and 12 leather goods and footwear manufacturing units in the large and medium scale in the State.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh, in collaboration with Government of India and the UNDP, has set up a Leather Training Institute and a Footwear Design Centre at Hyderabad for training of manpower for the industry and for providing access to latest international fashions to the manufacturer-exporters. Standardization, quality testing and CAD/CAM facilities for pattern-grading are the additional services provided by the Centre.

The manufacturers in Andhra Pradesh seek joint venture partnerships with well-established leather manufacturers abroad for local manufacture and export. Foreign investors are invited to set up tanning units (subject to compliance of local pollution standards) and leather goods manufacturing units in any of the industrial estates in the State.
