Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL)/The
English and Foreign Languages University (EFL University)
The Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL)
has metamorphosed into the English and Foreign Languages
University (EFL University). It is the 24th Central
University in the country, the new kid on the block,
created by an Act of Parliament. Indeed, the English and
Foreign Languages University Act, 2006, marks a
qualitatively different phase in the history of an already
great institution. The Institute, a brainchild of the
first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, was set
up in 1958. The mandate of CIE, as it was called then, was
to train teachers of English. In 1972 we witnessed a new
incarnation of the Institute: the Central Institute of
English and Foreign Languages; in 1992, CIEFL became a
Deemed University. At present, the mandate of the EFL
University has become much broader
The English and Foreign Languages University (EFL
University) is a Central University established by an Act
of the Indian Parliament on 3 August 2007. It is the only
university in India devoted exclusively to the study of
English and foreign languages.
The Act mandates the new university to advance and
disseminate “instructional, research and extension
facilities in the teaching of English and foreign
languages and literatures in India” as well as “to take
appropriate measures for inter-disciplinary studies and
research in literary and cultural studies, and to develop
critical intercultural understanding of civilizations.”
The English and Foreign Languages University grew out of
the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL),
which was a deemed university created by the Central
Government to improve the standards of the teaching of
English and foreign languages in the country.
At present, EFL University offers a variety of courses and
research programmes in English, Arabic, French, German,
Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. It is in the process of
expansion and development under the leadership of its
first Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abhai Maurya.
The English and Foreign Languages
University is a full-fledged Central (National) University
and has been specially set up to conduct advanced research
and training in English and foreign languages in the areas
of Teacher Education, Literature, Linguistics,
Interdisciplinary and Intercultural Studies. The
University runs a B Ed (English) programme, P G Diploma in
Teaching, M A, M Phil and Ph D programmes in English and
foreign languages such as Arabic, French, German,
Japanese, Russian, and Spanish etc. It also conducts a
variety of short training programmes for learners and
teachers of English and foreign languages. Teachers at
this university are essentially ‘facilitators’, and
endeavour to adopt what is known as a ‘learner-centred
approach’. They are among the best in the country and are
leaders in their fields. In
recognition of its outstanding academic contribution and
meritorious record, the National Assessment and
Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous evaluation
agency set up by the University Grants Commission,
Government of India, granted a five-star accreditation to
this university.
Situated on a 35-acre campus, the
University has the following curricular facilities:
