Seagate announces World's highest areal density hard drive at 100GB
per platter
Two-Platter 200GB Models
Feature Native Serial ATA or Parallel ATA Interfaces;
First Hard Drive Family to Introduce SATA Native Command Queuing
Hyderabad, September' 2003:
Leapfrogging the hard drive industry in storage density, Seagate (NYSE: STX)
introduced the world's first hard drive to store 100 Gbytes of data on a
single 3.5-inch platter. With the industry's most advanced head and media
technology, the new addition to the Seagate Barracuda
7200.7 family achieves a 200-Gbyte capacity using only two platters, and
offers the choice of a Parallel ATA (PATA) or native Serial ATA (SATA)
interface. The Barracuda 7200.7 is the industry's first hard drive family
capable of supporting SATA Native Command Queuing (NCQ). NCQ will be
implemented on production Barracuda 7200.7 SATA hard drives when system
architectures that support NCQ become more broadly available. NCQ is a
feature that can only be implemented on native Serial ATA hard drives like
Seagate's.
Seagate demonstrated SATA NCQ technology on its new 200GB Barracuda 7200.7
SATA hard drive at the Intel Developer Forum in San Jose, Calif. NCQ
technology enables the hard drive to intelligently reorder and optimize both
read and write command execution, improving the performance of queued
workloads by minimizing mechanical positioning latencies on the drive.
Barracuda 7200.7 Features
The new Barracuda 720.7 200-Gbyte SATA and PATA models are offered with an
8-Mbyte cache and a three-year warranty as standard features. Seagate's
popular Barracuda 7200.7 hard drives also come in capacities of 160, 120, 80
and 40 Gbytes. Barracuda 7200.7 hard drives offer excellent performance, and
are the toughest PC hard drives in the industry because they resist up to
350 Gs of non-operating shock.
They're also the quietest hard drives in their class, emitting less than 2.5
bels at idle and excellent performance. The low acoustics are made possible
by the Seagate patented SoftSonic FDB motor, which comes standard on every
drive. The new 200-Gbyte Barracuda 7200.7 is ideal for near-line storage
applications,Network-Attached Storage (NAS), entry-level ATA servers,
mainstream and high-performance
PCs, and home entertainment PCs. The 200-Gbyte Barracuda 7200.7 with a PATA
interface will ship next month through distributors. Shipments of the
200-Gbyte SATA version are scheduled to begin in November.
