Nandita Das’ directorial debut focuses on those affected by the 2002 Gujarat riots and how distrust has seeped into the lives of both communities. The story shows how a young Hindu couple, an elderly Muslim and a Hindu-Muslim couple cope with life in the aftermath, and how a young refugee embarks on a new journey towards hope.

Mostly shot in Hyderabad, Firaaq has been receiving rave reviews all over for Nandita Das sensitive handling of the subject. Intesne performance from all the starcast has brought alive the sensitiveness of the aftermath of communal riots in India today.Well done Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah, Shahana Goswami and above all Nandita Das for her commendable directorial debut. This film is basically for Film festival audiences.
