Hyderabad|India|May'2009: Much awaited film 99 which
released this Friday in theaters seems to have caught the attention of
mainstream American reviewers. New York Times gave the film a glowing
review and described the film as funny, assured and inventive.

Reviewer Rachel Saltz went on to recognize that 99 isn’t
typical Bollywood fare and is an example of a refreshing and modern
version of Indian cinema. Since its release the
film has been generating quite a buzz amongst reviewers and audiences
alike. Nikhat Kazmi of Times of India gave the movie 3 stars, as did Udita
Jhunjhunwala of DNA. Indiatimes rated it even higher at 3.5 stars
declaring “99 is 100% Entertainment” and Zee News called it ‘Paisa Vasool’.
Buzz18 thinks 99 is ‘a breath of fresh air’ and RealBollywood says the
film is ‘extremely entertaining’.
According to trade reports, the film is enjoying great
word of mouth, which is underscored by the 4 and 5 star audience reviews
on popular sites like Yahoo Movies.
Commenting on the review Producer Anupam Mittal says, "I
have always believed that a good film is a good film regardless of whether
it is made in Bollywood or elsewhere. The NY Times review further
strengthens my belief.’ |

Aditya Shastri added “We knew we
had a special film in 99, and it's reassuring to
know that the effort is recognized in leading
media publications not just here in India, but
across the world."
Raj and DK directors of the film said, "We wanted to
make a film that involves the audience in the story. We are glad that
people are responding enthusiastically.”
99 is a story inspired by real events in 1999 and 2000. It is as much
"what could have been" as it is "what really happened." In other words, it
is historical fiction. It spans a few genres, it is slick, fast-paced,
realistic and, importantly, very funny.
The movie is an unpredictable and hilarious ride spread
over two cities with colourful characters, unbelievable circumstances,
small-time crooks, big-time conspiracies, fateful car crashes, loads of
coffee, a briefcase full of money, a budding romance...
...and a historical controversy brewing in the background!
