Annual Convention of Society for Automobile Fitness & Environment (SAFE) -
an initiative of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers was organised
at Hotel Marriott in Hyderabad on 17th June. It was organised in
association with Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways. The main
theme of this year’s annual convention was ‘Safety through enforcement and
inspection & certification’. The convention was inaugurated by Chief
Guest, Principal Secretary, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. A.K Parida.

Gandhi, Transport Commissioner of Karnataka, Mr. Bhaskar Rao, Transport
Commissioner of Tamil Nadu, Mr. S. Machendranthan, along with other
dignitaries and senior Government officials from the ministry were present
at the inaugural function of the convention. Ms. R. Shoba, Special
Secretary, APPCB, Mr. Harjeet Singh, President, SAFE & A-VP, Hero Honda
Motors Ltd, Mr. I.V. Rao, Vice President & Managing Executive Officer,
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd and Mr. Dilip Chenoy, Director General, SIAM, were
also part of the inaugural ceremony to share insight about SAFE
initiatives.
During the inaugural session on Safety through Enforcement and Innovation,
Mr. A.K Parida, Principal Secretary, Government of Andhra Pradesh shared
his observation and knowledge on enforcement system flowed in India. Mr.
Alvin Mejia, Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities, from Philippines also
shared an overview of transport system in Southeast Asia. In a separate
discussion on inspection and certification followed as the best practices
to curb road accidents and increase road safety Mr. Kanji Nakayama,
Executive Vice President, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association
shared valuable knowledge on Traffic Enforcement System in Japan.
Dignitaries from the Government of India and Andhra Pradesh Government
also presented insights on safety practices followed in India.
An exposition to showcase the latest technological advancements available
for implementation of road safety was also organised, where Tata Motor’s,
Hero Honda, ESP participated. As a precursor to the convention a round
table was organised for a discussion on Norms & Regulation for
Automobiles.
SAFE also recognised Mr. A Nandkumar, Head Customer Service, Eicher
Motor’s for his extensive contribution to generate awareness on Road
safety.
Representatives from technical automotive inspectorate organisations from
Japan, Germany, Netherlands and Geneva shared the technical knowledge of
their best practices followed to certify a vehicle in order prevent road
accidents. There was also a panel of dignitaries from Andhra Pradesh
Government, ARAI, NATRIP, APSTRC, FADA and SAFE to discuss on Adoption of
Best practices: Enforcement and I & C system.
Mr. Dilip Chenoy, Director General, SIAM said, “SIAM is actively involved
to educate the masses about significance of road safety in India. Through
our special initiative SAFE we have taken this forward and have
incorporated expert’s views from developed countries that have been
benefited from enforcement and have achieved significant fall in number of
road accidents.”
Mr. Harjeet Singh, President-SAFE and Associate Vice President, Hero Honda
said, “With industry experts from India and outside and informative
discussions on illuminating topics, SAFE annual convention 2009 was
accomplished. I am thankful to the respective authorities and Andhra
Pradesh Government to have provided enough support to carry out our
endeavour towards increasing awareness about road safety and curding roads
hazards.”
This event registered a significant footfall from representatives of the
Ministries, Transport, Police, Environment, Auto Components and Automobile
Manufacturers, Academicians, Students, NGOs and others working for
improvement of Environment and Road Safety.
