In India, more than 11 million people suffer from severe obesity, and the
numbers continue to rise said Dr. Y. Krishna Mohan, M.S, FAIS, FMIS, FICS,
Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at Leads Medical Center,
Hyderabad in a press note issued in city today. Obesity increases the
risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions
that are commonly associated with it, such as Type II diabetes,
hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, among other health risks. For
certain patients bariatric surgery is the only realistic treatment option
and in some cases it can be life saving.
Off late, even youngsters and children are suffering from obesity
especially in urban areas. And many of them want to go for surgery.
Bariatric surgery should not be considered only as a cosmetic treatment
and people who are more than 40 kg or more, above their ideal body weight
can also undergo the bariatric treatment.
