Great Grandson of Sir Arthur Cotton called on CM


Mr.Robert Charles Cotton, great Grandson of Sir. Arthor Cotton with his wife also called on Sri N.D. Tiwari, H.E. Governor of Andhra Pradesh at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad on 26-11-2009. Sri P. Lakshmaiah,Minister for Major Irrigation is also seen.

Hyderabad|India|November'2009: Chief Minister Mr.K.Rosaiah described Sir Arthor Cotton as a great visionary. Mr.Rosaiah said - with his dedication, vision and hard work he brought prosperity and development to the then drought and flood prone areas in East and West Godavari districts.

The Chief Minister was speaking to Mr. Robert Charles Cotton, great grandson of Sir Arthur Cotton who called on the Chief Minister at latter's residence . The Chief Minister told Mr.Robert Charles that Sir Arthor Cotton is held in high esteem throughout Andhra Pradesh. Mr.Rosaiah described Sir Arthor Cotton as the 'Abhinava Bhagheeradha'. The Chief Minister thanked him for his visit to Andhra Pradesh.

He said the former Chief Minister Dr.Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy took inspiration from Sir Arthor Cotton and launched massive irrigation project under the name 'Jalayagnam'. The Chief Minister said Dr.YSR is today regarded as the ‘modern Arthor Cotton’. Mr.Rosaiah said Andhra Pradesh is predominantly on agricultural State and hence irrigation is the lifeline for farmers. Hence, his government is determined to complete all major, medium and minor irrigation projects to help the farmers in the State, he said.

The engineering prowess of Sir Arthur Cotton during the 1850s had given everlasting boon to farmers of Godavari and Krishna delta, which are called rice bowls of Andhra Pradesh. Sir Arthor Cotton is remembered by the people in the Godavari delta in Andhra Pradesh and in parts of Tamil Nadu and Bihar for his efforts towards construction of irrigation and navigation canals, the Chief Minister said.

Mr.Robert Charles Cotton said his grandfather had great concern for farmers and providing water was his top most priority. He praised India for its economic development and Andhra Pradesh for making rapid strides in agriculture. The Chief Minister thanked Mr Cotton for undertaking a tour of Andhra Pradesh. Mr Cotton will be felicitated at a public reception at Vijayawada on next Thursday.

Chairman of the Legislative Council, Mr Chakrapani, Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Rural Development Minister Vatti Vasantha Kumar, former Minister Mandali Buddha Prasad, former MP Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad and other officials were present at the meeting.
