must for asthmatics -

Hyderabad|India|July'2010: Monsoon bringing joy for many could
pose a threat to people with asthma especially around the time of
thunderstorm. The change in humidity and electrical charges that occur
during thunderstorms releases a burst of pollens and molds in the air.
These could severe asthma symptoms and trigger an asthma attack which
could further lead to hospitalization. Therefore, with rise in humidity
levels, it is important for asthmatics to strictly adhere to the
prescribed inhalation therapy as a preventive measure and also understand
the triggers and avoid
With a view to create awareness on preventing such asthma attacks in
monsoon, Breathefree, a public service initiative from Cipla organized an
asthma awareness drive in the city. Asthmatics from the city participated
in a mini-walkathon by holding umbrellas with messages advising about the
right asthma treatment – ‘Inhalation Therapy’.
Addressing the press conference organized prior to the walkathon, Dr.
Sudheer Alapati, Pulmonologist and General Physician, Sunshine Hospitals,
Hyderabad said, “With the advent of monsoon, majority of people face
several health problems like fever, cough, running nose and congestion.
Humid weather could be considered as the worst period for asthmatics and
they often find it difficult to keep their asthma under control in
monsoons. It is imperative that asthmatics use their inhalers everyday as
guided by the doctor. The use of inhalers along with understanding the
triggers and avoiding them could go a long way in preventing asthma
attacks.”
During monsoons, the incidence of asthma attacks and hospitalization
increases due to increase in pollens, fungal spores, house dust mites
thriving in damp houses, accumulation of dander from pets and dogs in
houses, and rising air pollution levels. So, it is essential for
asthmatics to control their condition by identifying factors that trigger
the asthma attacks and taking the necessary measures to minimize the
triggers at home, at work or school. If there is a situation where an
asthmatic cannot avoid the trigger, pre-treatment with appropriate asthma
medication can prevent the symptoms.
