Deccan Institute of Gem & Jewellery holds its Convocation Ceremony

Hyderabad|India|November'2008: Gemstones are helpful for mental, emotional and physical well-being said Dr. C.V.B. Subramanyam, Renowned Scholar and Head - Department of Astrology, Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University speaking at the Convocation ceremony of Deccan Institute of Gem & Jewellery held at its premises at Abids, Hyderabad.

Dr. Subramanyam talked on ‘Graha Doasha Nivarana Ratnala Patra’ (i.e. Gemstones role in overcoming planetary defects in human life). Gemstones have been used by humans from ancient times, not only for adorning but also to take benefits from them Dr. Subramanyam said. About 100 people comprising of representatives of the industry, jewellers/gemologits, astro-gemologists, graduating students and their parents were present on the occasion. Later he handed over certificates to the graduating students. The Institute conducted convocation ceremony for the 2008 batch of Diploma students in Diamond Grading and Gemology. Thirty students of Diamond Grading course and thirty students of Gemology received their certificates from the hands of Dr. C.V.B. Subramanyam.

Speaking about Gemstones, Dr. Subramanyam said that the healing powers of gemstones are derived from the special cosmic influences of their associated ruling planets. He said that humans are continuously subjected to the influences of Planetary rays. Each of the nine planets (nava-graha) influences us according to it's nature. He explained the wearing a gem on the ring finger is good for the heart, wearing the same in the neck in the form of a locket, helps one to be peaceful. Wearing gems on heads helps us take good decisions, that is why kings used to wear the crowns with gems in them, he said.

Gemstones governed by the Sun are natural ruby, red spinel, red garnet or red gems with crystal clear transparency. These stones when worn help one to discharge one’s duties with excellence. They confer courage and help elevate one’s status in society. Gemstones ruled by the Moon are natural pearl & moonstone, which enhance all mental faculties and pacify emotions and help the wearer to be peaceful. Selection of gemstones should be done carefully and they can be used for mental, emotional and physical well-being.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Satish Govindas Shah, Chairman - Deccan Institute of Gem & Jewellery Pvt. Ltd. said, "I take this opportunity to wish all students a very bright future on the occasion of them entering the professional jewellery world. The students should always remember that jewellery is not just about innovative design and impeccable quality but also wearable art that fulfills the basic desire of humans to adorn themselves."

Speaking on the occasion Ms. Priyanka Shah, CEO - DIGJ said, "Our vision at DIGJ it to develop quality professionals in the field of Gemology (scientific study of gemstones), Diamond Grading and Jewellery Designing, where the designers and craftpersons are not only good in designing but also in the technical aspects of jewellery manufacturing." Ms. Radhika Shah, Director - DIGJ informed that Gemologists and Diamond Graders graduating can either work as freelancers or with a jewellery store where they are highly sought after.

The family of Satish Govindas Shah, belongs to the family of jewelers since 1729, associated with the Moguls and later the Asif Jahis, until the last Nizam. In early 1960’s the scientific study of gems was initiated by Late Sri Govindas Mukandas. Later Mr. Satish Shah established India’s first private facility pioneering in training about Gem and Jewellery education - Deccan Institute of Gem & Jewellery. He is assisted by his two Gemologist /Jewellery designer daughters Priyanka Shah and Radhika Shah, who have created their niche in their customised products at Shree Gems & Minerals, the retail designer jewellery store.

About 3500 students have graduated from the Deccan Institute of Gems and Jewellery till date. The Institute offers diploma courses in Gemology, Diamond Grading, Jewellery Designing and Gem & Jewellery Marketing.
