20th & 21st June at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport
Hyderabad|India|June'2009:
GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL) will be again hosting the
thrilling Deccan ¼ Mile Drag Race on 20th June and 21st June, 2009 from
10.00 am onwards near old Haj Terminal at Rajiv Gandhi International
Airport. The rally will be organized by Andhra Pradesh Motor Sports Club (APMSC)
and the hospitality partner is Novotel Hyderabad Airport, Shamshabad. This
is the first part of the 3 series of drag races to be held, the other two
slated to be in September and December.
Drag racing is a competition in which vehicles compete to be the first to
cross a set finish line, usually from a dead stop, and in a straight line.
The sport is primarily practiced by cars and motorcycles.
In a drag race two vehicles go against each other over a straight,
measured distance from a standing start. The standard distances are a
quarter-mile (1,320 feet/402.3 m), 1000 feet (301.5m) (contested in the
highest horsepower classes only), or an eighth-mile (660 feet/201 m). A
standard drag racing event involves several classes, each competing in
their own single-elimination tournament of head-to-head races.
Teams from all over the country will be participating in this event in 30
(thirty) classes for cars and motorcycles, in which some new classes has
been provided of which one is for diesel cars and would be called the
Diesel open class and unrestricted class as this class is open to all
Indian cars with foreign engines, foreign cars and Specials, single seater
and non-production vehicles.
Several measurements are taken for each race: reaction time, elapsed time,
and speed. Reaction time is the time from the green light illuminating to
the vehicle leaving the starting line. Elapsed time is the time from the
vehicle leaving the starting line to crossing the finish line. Speed is
measured through a speed trap (which consists of an electronic infrared
sensor) near the finish line, indicating the approximate maximum speed of
the vehicle during the run. The winner is the first vehicle to cross the
finish line.
The Andhra Pradesh Motor Sports Club has been organizing Motor Sports
events in the state of Andhra Pradesh from 1984 onwards and conducted the
Charminar Challenge Rallies and the Deccan Rallies (a round of the
National Rally Championship) for many years.
The scrutiny and qualifying will be held on Saturday 20th June 2009 from
10.00 hrs. The finals and the prize distribution will take place on 21st
June 2009 from 10.00 hrs onwards at the venue.
Novotel Hyderabad Airport at Shamshabad has extended a special rate for
all the participants of the race being the hospitality partner. They are
also setting up a special food and beverage counter at the venue and for
those who want to try the lavish buffet, the hotel which is just 5 minutes
