Excellence Industry Award 2008 for BHEL, L&T and TCS
Hyderabad|India| The Institution
of Engineers India awarded 200 Prizes and Certificates under various disciplines
to engineers for their outstanding academic and professional excellence at the
23rd Indian Engineering Congress held at The National Institute of Technology
Warangal (NITW). The 3 day conclave of Indian Engineering Congress was held from
12 to 14 December 2008. Over 300 eminent engineers from various disciplines
across the country deliberated on the theme “Environment & Ecological Challenges
and the role of engineers.
A series of talks by eminent
engineering experts were held on topics that
centered around the central theme such as –
Transport Infrastructure
Planning in Urbanisation, Environment Friendly –
Urban Infrastructure for Sustainable Development,
Role of Engineers in association with NGO’s, Urban
Infrastructure, Its impact on environment,
Engineers role in environment protection, Soil and
Surface Air Warming in Cardamom Ecosystem in
Western Ghats Kerala. Environment and Ecology –
Role of Mining Industry Impacts of Large Dams on
Bio Diversity were discussed and reviewed.
In his message to young engineers Dr. Y V Rao, Chairman
Organising Committee Said “The challenge is to change the perception of
engineers from the present view that industrial development is the main
plank for safe and happy living. What is important now is to give equal
emphasis to sociological, environmental and ecological aspects.”
The Institution of Engineers India (IEI)
Excellence Industry Award 2008 was awarded to BHEL, Larsen &
Toubro Heavy Engineering Division, and TATA Consultancy Services. IEI also
presented the National Design Award to Dr. K Ramachandra, Former Director
Gas Turbine Research Establishment DRDO, Environment Engineering Design
Award to Dr. V Sundar, Professor in Department of Ocean Engineering IIT,
Chennai, Mechanical Engineering Design Award to Mr. Akbar Hussain Baig,
Distinguished Scientist Defence Mettalurgical Research Lab and the Suman
Sharma Award to Smt Geetha, Deputy Director, Geo Synchronous Satellite
Launch Vehicle Project, Vikram Sarabhai Space Center ,Thiruvanthapuram.
The 23rd Indian Engineering Congress which began on
December 12, 2008 attracted 300 engineering professionals and 1500
delegates. Several institutional prizes were awarded to eminent research
scholars and engineering professionals during the 3 day event.
For the first time, IEI Industry Excellence
Award to recognize the industry leaders for their innovation,
excellence in engineering including the Safety and Quality Awards to their
outstanding work in the field of safety and quality were given. In order
to promote advance design and research work in various branches of
engineering, The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) created the
National Design and Research Forum (NDRF). Each year, this forum gives
away a number of awards in recognition of valuable contribution in the
field of engineering design at National level.
In the Technical knowledge category IEI
awards were presented to Shri. MS Ballal, Shri Z.J Khan, Shri. R. Sharma,
Shri. O P Shah, Shri. V P Sethi, Dr. SK Sharma, Dr. SC Saxena, and Dr. V
Kumar.
IEI also felicitated Shri S Ramdorai, CEO and Managing
Director, Tata Consultancy Services; Dr Varaprasad Reddy, Managing
Director, Shantha Biotechnics Limited; Shri H V Paliwal, Former Director,
Mining Operations, Hindustan Zinc Limited; Dr Anumolu Ramakrishna,
Advisor, Larsen & Toubro Limited; and Shri Ramalinga Raju, Chairman,
Satyam Computer Services Limited eminent engineering personalities who
made significant contributions to make India progress towards achieving
the goal in various spheres of engineering and technology.
During the Congress, six Memorial Lectures, in honor of
the past doyens of the engineering profession were delivered by renowned
engineers namely Shri S Ramadorai, CEO and Managing Director, TATA
Consultancy Services; Lt Gen A K S Chandele, AVSM, Director General,
Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, Integrated Headquarters of
Ministry of Defence (Army), Government of India; Dato’ lr Lee Ye-Cheong,
President, ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology and Chairman,
Governing Board, UNESCO STI Centre for South-South Cooperation; Dr E
Sreedharan, Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation; Mr Lars
Bytoft, Chairman, Danish Society of Engineers; and Prof (Dr) Kouki Matsuse,
Meiji University, Japan, President-elect, IEE of Japan, were honored and
presented the Congress mementos.
Technical sessions covering a wide rage of technical
subjects were also conducted during the Congress.
