MAHESH RAMCHANDRAN WINS TATA PHOTON
MONSOON REGATTA

Hyderabad|India|July'2010: In expected form Mahesh Ramchandran and
crew RS Dulaji, Neeraj Sharma and G Sahu stole the crown from defending
champion Nitin Mongia and crew in style and in straight sets.
Each race of the three proved to be the closest Indian Match Racing has
seen with both sailors aggressively gaining and losing ground to each
other across all legs.
With two races won the pressure was on Mongia to take on the third race to
stay in contention for the Gold.
During the third race after some intensive pre start maneuvering keeping
the Umpires tense and busy Nitin won the start starting from the Committee
end and Mahesh from the pin end albeit a trice late. At the first
crossover Mongia was ahead and the upwind criss crossing continued with
Nitin opening up with every tack and looking pretty.
The first downwind leg and the next upwind leg saw the gap lessen a bit
and at the last upwind rounding Mahesh was close at Mogia’s tail but
seemingly having given up the chase.
A deep swig of much needed water and a few cool gibes later Mahesh hailed
“Yankee” essentially a sailors manner of calling a foul on the opponent
and the Umpire agreed and what could have at least moved to a fourth set
ended in a straight three setter win for Mahesh claiming the coveted Tata
Photon Monsoon Regatta YAI National Inland Championship and the Gold.
Nitin Mongia and crew Yuvraj Singh, PS Rao and G Randhawa after a
brilliant unblemished round robin and semi finals settled for Silver.
Gulshan Chunekar, Ninad Meykar, Chetan Fernandez with substitute Chaitanya
Chowgule were awarded the Bronze beating Ayesha Lobo and crew, who lost
the losers finals but retains the record of being the first India woman in
a Match Racing Semifinal.
The final Race in the Optimist saw Upamanyu Dutta winning once again.
Zephra finished with the Open Silver and the girls Gold. KC Ganapathy with
equal points finished with the Bronze as Zephra had more second positions.
