See, how other organizations have been doing.  Take for instance Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).  People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 2.0 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world.  PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry.

Writing letters to newspapers, businesses, and legislators is an easy, effective way to help animals, says PETA.

 

Amnesty International is another organization that pays lot of attention to how its activities speak and present their thoughts about Human Rights.  Amnesty is an independent and democratically-run organization established in 1961 to fight for the cause of Human Rights also has a systematic way of  teaching its activists the Public Speaking skills. 

 

Public Speaking for Activists Workshops are common to many organizations of International reputation.  They build strong cadre, activists basis out of public speaking.  Periodically they organize workshops "How to hook your Audience", "Handle Your Nervousness", "Stand Up, Speak Up and Speak Out" programs etc. 

 

American Federation of State, Country and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) organizes Training in Oratory to provide AFSCME leaders, activists and staff with essential skills and capability to deliver persuasive action messages that will  engage their listeners. The training provides participants with the tools for planning and giving effective presentations. Participants complete a series of practice  sessions, followed by instructive feedback in order to improve their public speaking ability. Effectively communicating the union’s message — whether in a public forum,  with the media, or most importantly, to union members — is critical to the continued growth and vitality of AFSCME, it says. The AFSCME Public Speaking Training is accredited by the National Labor College in their country.  VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America) helps its activists on Mastering Public Speaking and published a book to help them to learn to captivate their audience instantly.  It tells its activists how to put a speech together that makes their audience remember what they said. 

 

Public Speaking skill is a must to lobby a cause effectively, says Mrs. D.Kalpana, Director of Media Junction. Media Junction been conducting Public Speaking training classes for the past several years in Andhra Pradesh and all over India. "Public communication skills are important for anyone who needs to share information with others, or who hopes to persuade others about an issue," she says.

Here in India, the Shiv Sena party taught its activists oratory skills prior to the just concluded elections to woo voters.  With a view to attract more crowds during campaigns and public rallies for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Shiv Sena has organized a three-day workshop recently imparting training in oratory skills to its activists. "Senior party leaders taught them oratory skills along with a professional for effective campaign in public.  The sessions, a brainchild of Sena executive President Uddhav Thackeray, discussed other issues like awareness about voters' list, code of conduct and delimitation of constituencies.

 

The CPI(M) has roped in specialists to impart training in public speaking to members of local committees in Kerala.  Poets are born, but orators are made. Political parties offlate have woken up to this reality. The absence of good speakers to address street corner meetings during campaigns has been confronting parties of all hues.

 

Locally, Praja Rajyam Party and Loksatta Party and some other political parties too used services of professionals.  Praja Rajyam Party went a step ahead and organized seminars and training programs to select Spokespersons for each constituency. 

 

Across the parties we have some of the best Public Speakers such as Vajpayee, Venkaiah Naidu, Sushma Swaraj, Kapil Sibal, Narendra Modi, L.K. The list is little longer than what is presented here.  But, the number is not sufficient.  India today needs more orators.  Without exception every party needs orators more in numbers than it is now.

 

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation is an alltime effective communicator.  His five long hours speech during Round Table Conference in London says all about his Oratory skills.

 

Vajpayee's oratorial abilities are legendary. He always enthralled his audience with his oratory skills. He always did his best i.e to speak from his heart.  Wherever he went  and whatever he spoke about, he left an indelible mark on his audience.  With his wit and wisdom, he has been by far the best political speaker.

 

Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, who is known for his speaking skills relies mostly on his oratory skills.  He has always been countering Indians in India with his oratory.

 

Internationally too there are many good orators like Hitler, Mussolini, Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, etc. Their gift for fiery rhetoric had contributed to their coming to power.  Winston Churchill, speeches salvaged the morale of the British people and ultimately helped sustain them throughout the war. He is remarked as one of the best Orator, the British ever produced. There are plenty examples of great Oratory.
