Hyderabad|India|September'2009: The youngest kid to win a Rubik's
cube world championship at the age of 11, Bernett Orlando was in city
along with his Father John Louis, the first ever grand master of memoraid
in the world. 3x3 Blindfolded Rubik’s Cube Champion Bernett Orlando is the
youngest Rubik’s cube champion in the World. He is one of the celebrities
who made a rubik’s cube show at the opening of Memoriad (TM) – World
Memory Olympiad (World Mental Calculation, Memory & Photographic Speed
Reading Competitions).
Both of them were on the Faculty Panel of DRS Frolic, a week long camp for
children which concluded today. Both the father and son addressed 51 kids
drawn from various schools in twin cities and two from Bangalore on memory
techniques. While master Bernett displayed his mastery on the Rubik's cube
and also taught the children memory building techniques. They also
answered to participants answers.
Later in the lunch time father, son along with Mr. Prasada Rao, Principal
of DRS International School and Ms. Kavita Jain, Dean of DRS Para
Education addressed the press conference. It's pathetic that Rubiks Cube
is still not known sport in India.
The Rubik's Cube is a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in 19741 by Hungarian
sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the
"Magic Cube", the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toys in
1980 and won the German Game of the Year special award for Best Puzzle
that year. As of beginning this year, 350 million cubes have sold
worldwide making it the world's top-selling puzzle game. It is widely
considered to be the world's best-selling toy, he explained.
In a classic Rubik's Cube, each of the six faces is covered by 9 stickers,
among six solid colours (traditionally white, red, blue, orange, green,
and yellow). A pivot mechanism enables each face to turn independently,
thus mixing up the colours. For the puzzle to be solved, each face must be
a solid colour. Similar puzzles have now been produced with various
numbers of stickers, not all of them by Rubik. The original 3×3×3 version
celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2005, he added.
Only a handful of 5000 population play it. While many varieties of Rubiks
Cubes are available, here in India, we get only one basic model. About a
crore Rubiks Cubes are sold across the year. Near 60 countries in the
world recognised Rubiks Cube as a very effective Mind Sport. Penetration
of Rubiks Cube is more in Japan and China. It is also played the most in
Europe and USA. But, unfortunately, India still has not recognised this as
a Mind Sport. He appeal to government and various schools in the country
to introducte Mind Sports in school to divert kids from watching excessive
TV programming. Also urged that memory building must be integrated with
shcool subjects.
The Mind Sports such as bridge, Su-du-ku, Rubik's Cube are activities
which promote mental-skills. I have come acrossed well over 125 varieities
of Mind Sports in England. Here we don't find any. We must start looking
at seriously, he said.
I learnt solving Rubiks Cube from my father. Until last year i practiced
it one and half hour a day. Now I am in 9th standard. With more homework,
i spare little time practicing it, informed Bernett. My ambition is to
become a computer engineer. You know I am also a computer freak, he
declared.
Rubiks Cube is the best way to enage children to keep them away from TV.
It improves kids concentration, focus, analytical abilities and memory.
Kids will be active.
Once kids start playing with Rubiks Cube, one doesn't have to mug things
to remember it" claims John Louis. Bernett taught Rubiks Cube an American
Mathematics Professor, who later won American Memory Championship. Now
offlate he as been vising many IIT Colleges across India to teach them
Rubiks Cube. He also visited about 400 to 500 schools across India
teaching Memory Building Technique to his fellow students. He travelled
many countries in the world.
The achievements of Master Bernett age 13 now studying in 9th standard at
St. Xavir School in Thiruchiraplli in Tamil Nadu are envious. Though he is
presently 13 years all his achievements are in the open category( not in
children/junior/senior category). He is the youngest in the world to have
solved the cube blindfolded. He is the only kid to win a world
championship at the age of 11. He holds 26 Indian National records and 6
Asian records. He is a Master magic puzzle - INDIAN CHAMPION. He memorized
a pack of card in 3 minutes, 160 random numbers in 5 minutes, 300 binary
digits in 5 minutes. He can recall the day for any date between years 1600
& 2100. He can find out the perfect square root of a 4 digit number in 3
seconds mentally. He can find out the cube root of a 6 digit number
mentally in 2 seconds.
The tiny tot made the portrait of Marilyn Monroe using 1521 Rubik's cube
in 15 hours, which is again a WORLD RECORD. He competed 4th world Rubik's
cube championship-2007, Budapest, Hungary, Dutch open Rubik's cube
championship -2006, Delft, The Netherlands, Japan open Rubik's cube
championship -2007, Tokyo, Japan, Singapore open Rubik's cube championship
-2009, Singapore. He Conducted over 200 hundred workshops for schools
across the globe along with his father.
Memory building was just one module in the program design of the camp.
There were a quite a few interesting modules in DRS Frolic like Speaking
Skills, Manners & Etiquette, Online banking, Dance, Microwave cooking,
conversational skills, Adventure camp etc.,A special feature on 21st
century parenting for the parents of the participants was also organised.
This was done to help parents to understand their children and new age
parenting better, said Kavita Jain.
"The faculty panel comprised of 12 experts from across India. Along with
Master Bernett, Mr. Louis we had Mr. Nirmal Parekh, Chief Mentor peakpoint
- The Training Company, Guajarat , he brought with him a rich experience
of over two decades in training added Kavitha.
