The former Vice Chancellor of the University of
Hyderabad, Prof. Seyed E Hasnain was honoured with
an Honorary Doctorate Degree (honoris causa) by
the Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland,
UK on Monday 4 July, 2011.
Professor Hasnain is an internationally renowned

doctorate for his services in the fields of
science and medicine. He is only the third Indian

Sen (2010) to have received this honour.
Professor Stuart Elborn from Queen’s School of
Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences
delivered the citation for Professor Hasnain at
the graduation ceremony. The citation reads as
follows: “Professor Hasnain is one of the world’s
leading biological scientists. He is perhaps best
known for his extraordinary contribution to the
study of Mycobacterium tuberculosis - the
bacterium that causes TB, taking one human life
every 15 seconds. As the first Director of the
Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics at
Hyderabad, he was instrumental in making the
Centre a gold standard for DNA analyses services
and research in basic biology. Professor Hasnain
has won almost all India’s major science awards
alongside a number of international accolades. I
am pleased that today he can add an honorary
degree from Queen’s to that long list of
achievements.”
Prof. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy, Vice Chancellor of
University of Hyderabad on behalf of the
University fraternity and on his own behalf
