Special Cell with dedicated number to deal with harassment against women

CM directs officials to work out modalities

Hyderabad|India|December'2008:
The Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy took a landmark decision to set up a separate dedicated Special Cell to deal with incidents of harassment against women and abuse against children. The Chief Minister expressed serious concern over the incidents of harassment against girls, women and abuse of children.

He reviewed the issue and the urgent steps to be initiated at an emergency high-level meeting with the Home Minister, DGP and other top Police officials. Dr Reddy said "it cannot go on like this and we are not going to let this. Protection of women and children are our top most priority. No Society can thrive where women and children are not protected. I was making a deep study on the situation. I am seriously concerned about the incidents of harassment against women and abuse against children. We will enforce the law strictly and deal with the harassment cases with an iron hand".

The meeting decided to constitute a dedicated separate Cell with a dedicated number like the 104 and 108 for dealing with even a small incident of harassment against women and abuse against children. Any one can make a call to this number from any nook and corner of the State and the Police are supposed to be there within scheduled time and plunge into action to nab the accused. This number could be a 3-digit and like the response of the 108 team, the response will be instant and quick and there would not be any delay. The Cell would work under the Police Department. He directed the Chief Secretary to convene a detailed meeting in this regard to work out the modalities. The Chief Minister wanted this Cell to be a role model in the country.

The Chief Minister said "in a healthy civilised society, women and children should get complete protection. They should be able to move without fear. I also want the people to give their suggestions for further improvement of the proposed Cell. The Government is spending thousands of crores of rupees for development, welfare and protection of women and children". Hence the State Government would not mind to spend any amount to further ensure protection of women and children.

Home Minister K Jana Reddy, Chief Secretary, Ramakantha Reddy, DGP, SSP Yadav, Additional DGP, Intelligence, Arvind Rao, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, Prasada Rao, Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad, Prabhakar Reddy, Principal Secretary to CM, Jannat Hussain and other officials attended the meeting.
