Oct 26th:CM in Hong Kong, seeks mutual
cooperation in IT

Secretary of Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau of Hong Kong Mrs Carri Yau on Thursday expressed willingness to mutual cooperation and support in the field of Information Technology with Andhra Pradesh.
The Andhra Pradesh delegation led by the Chief Minister Mr N Chandrababu Naidu reached Hong Kong on the eve of Deepawali and had elaborate discussions with Mrs Yau and made a presentation on the investment opportunities in IT sector in Andhra Pradesh.
In his presentation, named “Into the Information Age” the Chief Minister talked of the strategy of the state government with respect to IT in terms of Bandwidth, Education, Smart Government and Twinning with the private sector and Connectivity .
He said under Governmental Intranet programme, AP State Wide Area Network was being established with the help of Fibre Optic link between Hyderabad and Districts which has the facility of storing data, voice and Video, and AP Secretariat Campus Area Net work . Under State Information Infrastructure 20,000 kilometres of Department of Telecommunications network was available and the work by Reliance would open International gateways.
The Chief Minister said education was being given major thrust. He said that whereas there were only 32 Engineering colleges in 1995 in the state , they have been increased to 104, 44 MCA colleges in 1995 shot up to 116 and with a view to give more fillip to information Technology 414 BCA colleges were also opened. Mr Naidu said Indian Institute of Information Technology was opened and Carnegie Mellon University would commence its classes from January 2001. Institutions of Excellence were also being developed in Hyderabad.
Mr Mr Naidu also explained
about the eGovernment projects like computerization of Registration
Department, Treasuries, One Stop Services, Transport, GIS for development
planning, Citizen data and also about the proposed Portal.Investment
opportunities in Hardware units, Software development centres, Data
Centres, IT infrastructure, Smart Government projects and IT enabled
services.
Later, reacting on the presentation, Mrs Yau said India was ahead of many
other countries and Hong Kong was at a little slower pace. She sought the
cooperation of Andhra Pradesh in this regard and assured that she would
lead the business delegation to Andhra Pradesh and explore the
possibilities of investment here.
Deputy Director of Information Technology Broadcasting Bureau Mrs Annie
Jam explained about the proposed Cyber Port to be constructed in three
phases in Hong Kong. The construction under Phase –I of Cyber Port was
started in 24 hectares of land near Hong Kong university which would be
finished by the end of 2001, second phase by 2002 and the final phase by
2003, she said adding that the proposed Cyber Port would be the most
modern with state-of-the-art technology. She said already 15 large
business houses expressed their willingness to start their business in
proposed Cyber Port and another 150 would also join them.
She also reminded that Finance Secretary Mr Donald Tsang categorically
underlined the importance of Information Technology and due weightage was
given in the budget announced for the year 1999.
Deputy Secretary Mr Alan Siu explained the strategy, policies and plans of Hong Kong government to promote overall Information Technology. He said the state government was extending financial assistance to promote Information Technology sector and Science Park.
