The delegation of Doha Asian Games Organizing
Committee were in city to promote the event
Hyderabad: 15th Asian Games will be held
at Doha in the year 2006. The State of Qatar and
its capital city, Doha, have been selected, after
an intense competition with major Asian cities, to
host the games from 1st to 15th December, 2006.
The seven member delegation of Doha Asian Games
Organizing Committee led by Mr. Ali Mohd Mubarak,
Director General were recently in city to promote
the event. The delegation hosted a grand gala
dinner at Taj Krishna in honour of the
delegates of Afro Asian games. Over 400 delegates
including Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, President of Indian
Olympic Association, Mr. Randhir Singh, Secretary
General of Indian Olympic Association, Dr. Tamas
Ajan, President of International Weigh lifting
Association among other dignitaries participated
in the dinner.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Ali Mohd Mubarak said
Afro Asian Games were righfully born in the
country where Asian Games too were bron in the
year 1951. And urged all the delegates to
participate in large numbers in forthcoming Asian
Games and requested them to make it a success.
Mr. Ismail Ali I. M. Al-Ansari, Director of
Marketing and Sponsorships of Doha Asian Games
Organizing Committee said with 33 sports and
approximately 403 events to be held during the
15th Asian Games, the State of Qatar has made
great strides over the last decade in organizing
many prestigious events including the forthcoming
event, he said. Two new games Chess and Triathlon
are being included in this forthcoming event for
the first time, informed Mr. Ansari.
Qatar, a youthful and active country boasts of a
great number of first-class stadium and sports
facilities -- there are 14 sports complexes in
Doha alone. Each of these facilities was carefully
designed to be multifunctional and will now be
renovated and refurbished to attain the capacity
levels required to host the Asian Games. This
work, together with the construction of the
required new venues, is scheduled for completion
in time for the West Asian Games in 2005, which
are also being hosted by Qatar.
Sports in Qatar is of paramount importance and
enjoys great popularity with the younger
generation. The State of Qatar has spared no
expense in purchasing state-of-the-art sports
equipment and on the refurbishment and maintenance
of its sports installations. The Asian Games
Village with a world class health care facilities
will be the centre of the international sporting
scene, hosting as many as 10,000 athletes and
accompanying officials representing 44 Asian
countrie, informed Mr. Ansari.
Mr. Ansari thanked the organizers of 1st
Afro-Asian Games for their wonderful hospitality
and wished twin citians as well as all Indians a
Happy Diwali.
