"I
love to read, but my child doesn’t!" .Sounds
familiar ?
Well, you need not be the one saying it anymore.
Book Reading is on the wane, particularly among
the school going children.
Hyderabad: Today one of the most
neglected educational snag in school is ‘Lack of
Reading Habit’. Ask most of the kids and they
seldom prefer Reading as a hobby. No wonder, most
of the child’s school day is devoted to
reading-skills instructions yet, words remain
bookish and many kids can hardly read any other
book other than the school text.
Moved by the sad reality of fewer and fewer people
turning to books as a source of recreation, Mr.
G.S. Sethi, Publisher of English Edition and
organiser of Festival of Books here at YMCA,
Secunderabad decided to run a unique essay writing
competition "Uniqueness of Reading" for school
children. The competition is open free to school
children of twin cities. Children studying in
Classes 5 to 7 need to write a hundred word essay
in English, handwritten (neatly and legibly) or
typed. The entries can be dropped before 2pm on
Thursday 18th December in a drop box put up at
English Editions’ Book Exhibition currently open
at YMCA Secunderabad. Students need to give their
contact details such as Name, Class, School and
Contact telephone numbers.
Giving details of a novel Reading habit promotion
drive, 53 years old Sethi, who is committed for
the cause of Guarding the Reading Habit said the
objective of the competition is to "Grant the gift
of reading habit to the children". Further he
added that book reading is a fun and pleasure. A
good book is the best of friends, it is the same
today and forever. A wonderful thing about a book,
in contrast to a computer screen, is that, you can
take it to bed with you.
The winners of the contest in will be given away
priceless books. The winner will get books of
worth Rs 1000/-(one thousand), runner up Rs 750/ -
and third prize winner will get books worth Rs
500/-. Five consolation prizes will also be given.
