uggests Rating system for educational institutions
by independent and private agency
Hyderabad: In our country parents have no life
of their own. They live for their children and
their education sake. They keep hope for their
life and future on their siblings. But, our
universities have remained as factories churning
out millions and millions of graduate only to be
unemployable. Nearly 3.5 lakh technical graduates
come out of various institutions every year out of
which 60 per cent come from South India alone.
Giving this scenario in higher education, i am
deeply concerned and greatly disturbed both as
citizen and as a parent, said
Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan,
convenor of Loksatta said. He was addressing a
guest lecture at a Workshop on Directions in
Higher Education -- Indian Context organised by
Globarena, a Hyderabad based learning and
knowledge solutions organisation.
Speaking further, Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan said the
higher education which provides leadership has
become unemployment generating engine. The
universities which are supposed to manage
education, are busy managing law and order. It is
really disturbing, he said. Today’s institutions
have no integrated approach to the education. Our
education is compartmentalized. We need holistic
approach. Institutions need to be more innovative
towards effective higher education.
In conclusion Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan said, we
need to give more stress on application of
knowledge than memorising. That should be the
criteria for qualifying in a particular studies.
Education must be society linked. There should be
an interface between society, industry and
educational institutions. On Government part,
excess government regulations must go.
Institutions must be given greater choice. There
must be some kind rating of education institutions
by an independent and private agency. He
appreciated Globarena for their pioneering efforts
in organising such workshops and career oriented
employability training to students and technology
enabled industry-academicia interaction.
Prior to him Dr. Dakshinamurthy, Founder Director
of Globarena and Dr. Harshbarger, Senior Director
of International Outreach Programs of University
of Washington also spoke on the subject. Besides
them Prof. Y. Purandhar, Head of Department of
Computer Science and Training & Placement Officer
at Konneri Lakshmaiah Engineering College, Mr.
Rajesh Toranagatti, Vice President of Manipal
Computer Academy and Dr. Babu Shankar, Principal
of KITS College of Engineering, Huzurabad, Dr.
Geeta Sharma, Director of Magene Life Sciences,
Mr. M. Ram Mohan Rao, Executive Director of A.P
Genco and Ms. Padma, Manager Human Resources of
SQL International also spoke about their
perspective at the day long workshop.
Forty College Heads of different colleges
participated in the workshop. Some of these
colleges include Kakatiya Institute of Technical
Sciences, Warangal; Manipal Computer Academy,
Manipal; Centre for Entrepreneurship Development,
Madurai, Tamil Nadu; Sreenidhi Institute of
Technology and Alloori Institute of Management
Sciences and Vidyarthi Colleges, Vizag. The
objective of the workshop was to bridge the gap
between industry and academicia.
