Round Table India embarks on major education drive

City Round Table-134 takes up yet another major school project

To build a school at Alur village in Ranga Reddy District at a cost of Rs ten lakh

Hyderabad: Illiteracy is the biggest impediment in the economic growth of any nation. India is no exception. It has the largest population of uneducated children. 50 years of Independence of this great nation made no difference to these illiterate poor children. Their education is a very sorry state of affair even today. The irony of Indian children is thirteen out of eighteen crore are being held prisoners in the clutches of illiteracy. Even after so many years after Britishers left this country, we still have six crore Indians who have never ever been to a school. Seven crore have studied only upto class seven. Illiteracy drives these children to poverty and child labour. In this light of background, Round Table India, a Global Young Men’s organisation, has taken up the cause of "Freedom through Education".

This project is an initiative to bring primary literacy to ten lakh children in India by assisting in the construction of over 2000 schools by the year 2008, of which over 500 schools have already been built with investment of Rs 40 crore, facilitating education for over 250 thousand children across the country.

In line with their national programme City based 6 Round Table organisations as well as 11 other tables in the state of Andhra Pradesh have taken up about 35 school projects. Now yet another Project is taken by Hyderabad Area Round Table-134, to fund construction of school at Alur Village near Chevella in Ranga Reddy District. A government school for 600 primary girl children at Alur will be taken up at a cost of rupees ten lakhs for which they have already lined a fund raising programme Live in Concert of The Great Ghazal King Jagjit Singh. The event will be hald at Viceroy Convetion hall on 15th February.

Round Table -134 has already taken up construction of five similar schools earlier in the past four years. These include one at Sanathnagar, Addagutta in city, Chevella in Ranga Reddy district, Kothagudem and Lakshmapur both in Nalgonda District, all put together at a cost of Rs 61 lakh. Construction of these schools were taken up in agreement with Department of School Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh, under Janmabhoomi programme on 25:75 contribution basis.

The other school projects taken up by other Round Table organisations in Andhra Pradesh include Niloupher Special School at Lakadikapul; Tanguturu Urdu Primary School at Shankerpally; Red Cross Government Girls High School at Masabtank; Purender Government Round Table School at Begumpet; Filmnagar Round Table High School at Filmnagar; Vijayawada Municipal School at Ramalingeshwar in Krishna District; Pedana Mandal Parishad Upper Primary School at Vijayawada and others to name a few.

Several corporate houses too have extended their valuable contributions for the projects. These include Wipro which contributed Rs 80 towards building of 14 schools at a cost of Rs 27 crore. NOVIB Round Table from Netherlands, partnered with Round Table India to raise Rs 15 lakhs for a project in Orissa. Through their partnership 75 schools were constructed. The Azim Premji Foundation helped construct 50 schools and computer learning centres. Round Tablers have arrangement with Government of Andhra Pradesh under Janmabhoomi Programme to build more than 50 schools across the state in next couple of years.

According to Tabler. Pankaj Gupta, our initiative was well appreciated by The President of India, Dr. A.P Abdul Kalam. Speaking about our contribution, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh complemented and promised all help in our endeavour.

Our vision is to educate ten lakh children across India, says another Tabler Ashish Tibrewala, who is Convenor for Fund Raising for Hyderabad Area Round Table-134. The twin citians can help us realise our vision by supporting our fund raising activities. Out of 18.6 crore children in the 5 to 14 years age group, ten crore are not in school. Of the rest 8.6 crore, four out of ten who start in Grade I reach Grade 8 only. We at Round Table India, believe we can change this with our project-Freedom through Education, said both the tablers Pankaj and Ashish.
