Hyderabad, May: CARE HOSPITALS, one of the leading healthcare organisations in the state of Andhra Pradesh achieves yet another milestone and registers it’s first and Andhra Pradesh’s second Cardiac Transplantation operation. The operation was  performed for about  three hours around  midnight of Sunday(10th May) and transplanted a heart of a donor who was declared brain dead  to a recipient who was in an end-stage of heart disease.

The donor sustained head injury and subsequently declared brain dead following an accident. The receipient has been admitted in the hospital for more than 4 months for end-stage heart disease with refractory heart failure.

The Transplant Surgery was performed by a team of Cardiac Surgeons and Cardiac Anesthetists led by Dr. Gopi Chand Mannam, MS, FRCS at CARE HOSPITALS, Banjara Hills.  Care Foundation is extending significant financial support through its Care Relief Fund.

Dr. B. Soma Raju, Chairman--Care Hospitals under whose care the recipient has been undergoing treatment, announced an active Heart Failure Program for growing number of patients with chronic heart failure.  The program aims not only optimizing the medical management, but also will institute emerging interventional and surgical technique to alleviate the suffering and prolong life of patients with refractory heart failure.

Heart transplantation operation which is very rare in this country is  fast picking up for the past couple of years.  A.P is the third state in the country in heart transplant surgeries, registering its second such a case now (first being the Global Hospital).  Heart is normally harvested from a donor who is decided as brain dead by  neurology committee and transplanted to the recipient who is in the end stage of heart disease.
