For the Elizabethans, theatre was popular entertainment, with the pits filled
with cheering masses looking for a laugh after a dreary day. The theatre
division of Clowns R Us attempts to do something similar with Monkey Business,
giving twin citians a chance to relax with a performance that is full of fun and
not too esoteric.
Monkey Business is a story of a Gujarati wedding caterer who along with his
dominating wife and a pretty teenage daughter visits a not so friendly
neighbourhood country. While taking photographs of some tourist attractions,
which are actually nuclear sites. They are chased by the dreaded secret service
and run into the Indian Embassy. From here on starts a roller-coaster ride of
laughter with a host of odd-ball characters like the Indian ambassador’s
bungling son, a priest who is also a magician in his spare time, a south Indian
chef, visiting sheikh with his burqua clad wife. Things just keep getting more
and more complicated. Various escape plans are devised which ultimately fail,
finally the Gujarati family dresses like Sardarji’s to escape to India. This
charade leads to more confusion and more laughter.
When a play is called Monkey Business, you pretty much know what to expect,
rather what not to expect. And when it carries with it the dubious distinction
of being written and directed by Bharat Dabholkar of Carry On, Bottom Up, Oh No,
Not Again fame, you realise that you cannot apply any of the parameters of
reviewing a play to it. It is a two hour two-act performance. The same
organizers have staged last year On Ho, Not Again play belonged to the same
group with the same star cast in city which was a super duper success.
The show is being organised with the support of several like minded
organisations such as ITC Hotel Kakatiya Sheraton, Indian Airlines, Bank of
Maharashtra, Solus Media, Mindkraft, Concern For Twin Cities, Hyundai, American
Colours, Teeth For Life, Dr. Rashmi’s Clinic and others.
The cast of the play include Bharat Dabholkar(Director), Kishore Pradhan, Atul
Parchure, Ananya Dutta, Vijoo Khote, Vihang Naik. The play is produced by Ashvin
Gidwani.
Bharat is a well known theatre personality and Ad man in India. He has an
outstanding record of 15 super hit plays to his credit. Offlate his name has
become the biggest crowd puller. The ‘Bottoms up’ series created by him
introduced a new language ‘Hinglish’ which has broken all records by performing
more than 400 shows. He is also the head of Publicis Zen -- one of the leading
Ad Agencies in Mumbai.
Vijoo Khote was a household name 25 years ago for portraying Gabbar’s henchman
Kaalia. Vihang Nayak is one of the very few successful artists on the Hinglish
stage. Kishore Pradhan is a multi-talented comedian, T.V artist and ad model.
The other plays of the cast are Bottoms Up, Monkey Business, Last Tango in
Heaven, Carry On Bindas, Mind Your Stethoscope.
