Hyderabad|India|March'2010: The libraries are the repositories of knowledge, information and entertainment. Their importance has increased many folds. The librarianship has attained the status of a separate discipline in the universe of knowledge. Librarians are the custodians of libraries and they organize, maintain, and store books in the libraries. They help people to find information and use it effectively in their personal and professional lives. The traditional libraries which until recently contained only books now have periodicals, micro-films, videos, cassettes and slides for various purposes such as education, research, reference and pleasure. One man who made a difference to library science in the state of Andhra Pradesh is Dr. Velaga Venkatappayya.

In his 78 years of life, he spent 50 years for the cause of libraries and library science in Andhra Pradesh. He is well known all over the world but not much known in our own state. He was recently felicitated in city along with two others such as Shri Tripura, a short story writer and Shri Ravi Kondala Rao a well known film artist with Yagalla Foundation Award by Mr. Dharmana Prasada Rao, Minister for Revenue, Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Dr. Velaga Venkatappayya is considered as Father of Library Science in Andhra Pradesh, as he is the first to prepare syllabus for the Library Science Instruction in the state. He was the first Principal for the School of Library Science in the state of Andhra Pradesh. He prepared syllabus for Graduation and Post Graduation level courses in the state. University Grants Commission sought his help in preparing the syllabus for the PG courses.

He has an envious track record. In honour of his remarkable achievement a Acharya Ranga College of Educational Library was named after him. A street in the village of Devapuram in Guntur District is named after him. Even a street in Itanagar in Guntur city is also named after him. Such is his greatness.

Besides dedicated librarian, he is an author. He authored more than 500 books. 27 books authored by him are found in Washington Library, where more than 5000 people work organising one crore plus books. Dr. Velaga Venkatappayya is so famous Ohio Online Computer Library Centre which catalogues books of all the world famous libraries revealed that almost all of them have the books of Dr. Velaga Venkatappayya.

March of Library Science authored by him said to have been found in more than 73 famous libraries across the globe. Indian Library Registration authored by Dr. Velaga is today available in 13 libraries across the globe including Germany .

He worked relentlessly. His entire life was fully dedicated to the cause of library science education and library movement. He was one of the few librarians who fostered and developed the libraries in the state - public, academic, scientific and research libraries, visualised libraries as resources for perpetual self-education, knowledge and information. He helped many libraries with the permanent buildings.

He inspired many library professionals. His personal life was so much interwoven with his professional life. Many today's youth must read and know more about him. Books are the power houses of knowledge. Libraries serve humanity making books available to everybody. A visit to library make a hell lot of difference. An hour spent in library is gives a personal calmness, he observes.

He won many awards and rewards. He is truly an unsung hero.
