His records speaks for him
*He remains the only player in the 117-year history of Test cricket to score centuries in each of his first three matches - all against England.
*He has the distinction of scoring the fastest century in one-day internationals. He scored a Century in just 62 balls. During the course of this match-winning performance he scored a 108 (not out), which came in 65 deliveries and included 3 sixes and 10 boundaries. This was against New Zealand at Baroda on 17 December, 1988.
*He remains the only Indian to score a century in a session. On 10 August, 1990, the second day of the second Test against England at Manchester, he made 103 runs (59n.o. to 162n.o.) between lunch and tea.
*He is the only Indian captain to register three successive victories by innings margins in the same Test series. These were recorded against Sri Lanka at Lucknow, Bangalore and Ahmedabad during the 1993-94 season. Just before this achievement, he had also led India to three consecutive wins by innings margins but in different series- at Calcutta and Bombay against England; and at New Delhi against Zimbabwe, during the 1992-93 season.
*He has equalled the Indian record of the most Test wins as a captain. In 28 Test matches, he has notched up nine victories, equalling in the process the previous best jointly held by Sunil Gavaskar and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. Another unique thing about Azhar's leadership is that he has led India to victories in all eight home Test matches so far- four against Sri Lanka, three against England and one against Zimbabwe.
*He has captained India through maximum no. of matches in limited overs cricket, surpassing the previous best, of 74 matches, captained by Kapil Dev.
*He also has the distinction of scoring the most runs in one-day internationals for India:4762 runs from 178 matches, with 3 Centuries and 26 Fifties.
