Mega plans on the anvil to
curb City Pollution
|
The government, in a bid to set an example for the citizens to follow, has decided to scrape 3,000 of its vehicles which are more than 15 years old in the city as a
first step towards reducing air pollution form automobile exhaust.
The Government has also decided to instruct the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation to convert all its buses in the twin cities from diesel to either compressed natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas to reduce pollution.
In another significant decision to determine the impact of air pollution on the citizens, the government decided to conduct a study on the correlation between the increasing air pollution and the incidence of various diseases and health problems among the people.
The government has decided to study the feasibility of encouraging office goers, especially government employees to switch to a park and ride
facility. All those who own their vehicles can reach a given point from where public transport will be available to their office complexes.
A special task force has also been constituted to study the implementation of air pollution control measures. The force comprises Road Authority joint commissioner, deputy commissioner of
police (traffic), APSRTC executive director, MCH commissioner and AP State Pollution Control Board members secretary.
The state cabinet also decided to go in for a feasibility study of using vertical exhaust pipes for all motor vehicles with more than 3.5
tones of unladen weight. Among the other measures the Cabinet approved were installation of more electronic timing devices at traffic junctions and the opening of a pollution grievance cell for people to report
violations or register complaints.
