15-yr Old vehicles to be phased out in City
In a move to check the growing pollution, a draft notification seeking immediate phasing out of commercial vehicles of more than 15 years age has been put for a public
debate. The draft Notification-2000 envisages phasing out of the old vehicles over the next five
years. As per the provisions of the Draft Notification commercial/transport vehicles over 15 years of age would be phased out
immediately. Commercial vehicles over 12 years of age and private four -wheelers over 15 years of age from 2002,commercial vehicles over 9 years of age and private four wheelers over 12 years of age from 2008.
All four-wheeler passenger vehicles to be registered in future should meet the Bharat stage-2
norms. Old two-stroke engine vehicles would also be completely phased out, age
-wise, every year by March 31,2005.Bt then, clean fuels with one per cent benzene content in petrol and 0.05 per cent
Sulphur content in petrol and diesel would be made available throughout India.
Provisions were also being made for supplying petrol and diesel only to the vehicles carrying a
valid "Pollution Under Control" certificate. Starting October this year ,it was also proposed to replace loose 2T oil with pre-mixed and packed oil for the two stroke petrol vehicles.
The Road Transport authority would also make available special Postal Cards at public places such as bus
stations, railway stations and post offices by which people can write down the registration number of of
vehicles emitting excess smoke and post it for further action by the RTA.
The city has over 10.4 lakh vehicles and growing day by day and the draft notification has been introduced to check the growth of pollution emitting from these
