India removed from Aussie immigration risk list

Indians should find it easier to get visas for Australia now, with Canberra deciding to remove the country from the immigration risk list.

Three other countries-Bulgaria, Czech Republic and El Salvador have also been removed from the list which signifies that the citizens of the designated countries have a tendency to overstay their visitor visas for Australia.

According to the Australia department of immigrations and multicultural affairs statistics for the financial year 1999-2000, which ended on June 30, as many as 105,194 Indians landed on Australian soil. On the short-term or long-term visitor visa departed from Australia. India was at number six in the list (excluding New Zealand nationals as they are covered under separate immigration regulations) of countries from where the maximum number of arrivals were recorded.

But Australia has added five new countries on the immigration risk list-Afghanistan, Armenia, Brazil, North Korea and Mongolia. Fifty other countries have the dubious distinction of being mentioned in the high-risk list.
