HC awards 1 cr damages to Ramakrishna Theatre

In a judgment of far-reaching consequences, the AP High court has directed the state government to pay Rs 1 crore as damages to the owners of Ramakrishna 70 mm theatre for damages sustained by the theatre in the riots and arson that followed the killing of former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. Justice G Bikshapathy passed the ruling while allowing a writ petition filed by the manager of the theatre complaining
of police inaction in protecting their property.

It may be recalled that on the night of May 21,1991,the mob burnt
down the theatre situated near the Abids police station. The management filed a writ petition seeking damages from the state government as well as the Insurance companies. They relied upon the report of the Commission of enquiry, headed by Mr.Justice(Retd.) M.R.A.Ansari,to prove that the police failed to take necessary action.

The judge directed the government to pay the awarded damages within
a period of three months together with a 18 percent interest.
